For the last month and a half, I have spent every weekend working through everything I own, deciding what I want to take with me, what I want to keep to "show my kids one day," and what I don't need. It is exhilarating, and a bit daunting.
The first section -- the stuff I want to take with me -- I'm breaking down into two waves.
The first wave is the stuff that I need to have on a daily basis: my clothes, kitchenware, and basic furniture and decor, like my entryway table and bowls to go on there. These will be the first things to go. This way, my life can be functional for a while.
The second wave is the stuff that makes life neat: books, craft supplies, and a bit more expressive decor, like candle holders and miscellaneous garlands. These are life's enhancers, but not the necessities.
Wave One is being stored in a Smartbox, and will be divvied up among the three vehicles in the afternoon and evening of May 15th. Wave Two is being staged in my room for now, which is getting easier to navigate by the day.
The second section contains a mishmash of old school projects, hand-me-downs, stuffed bears from Jake, and newspapers from major events (9/11, Obama's election, etc.) and will be staying at my parents' house. These are the things that I can tell my kids about one day and have stuff to show them. ("Yes, kids, I was around for the Clinton scandal -- I really am that old!")
I've made four trips to local thrift stores to
Despite all this, it seems that my to-do list is never-ending.
That makes me nervous because time is running out.
See, I am trying to get all of this moving stuff packed up and ready to go by March 27th (!!) at the latest.
On March 29th, I am photographing an event, and I want to be able to spend the six weeks following that on editing. My clients deserve it.
One of the hugest blessings is that I have most everything I need.
Dining room table & chairs? Check. Kitchen- and tableware? Check and check. Towels, washcloths, and bath mats? Shower curtains? Bed linens? Blender? Slow cooker? Che----ck.
Going in, the only things I knew for sure sure I didn't have were dining furniture and a vacuum, and I've taken care of those things. (The former was courtesy of the Habitat Restore -- I've loved thrift shopping since well before Macklemore made it mainstream.)
I do still need: steak knives, a large Thundershirt for my 46-lb Bailey girl, a curved shower curtain rod, and a corner caddy for the tub-shower.
I won't turn down gift cards to King Soopers or Target, either. (The budget's going to be a bit tight for a while, until I get used to everything.)
Since today is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and since my Moving To-Do list is mountainous and I should get back to it, I thought it was appropriate to close with this graphic from the famed author:
